RULES AND REGULATIONS
Colorado Junior Swine Association By Laws
Mission of the CJSA:
To provide youth swine exhibitors in Colorado with a network of support and opportunity to gain knowledge in the purebred, show pig and
commercial swine industry.
1. Organization
a. CJSA is designated for the spring and summer show pig circuit in Colorado that is comprised of sanctioned shows and youth
development activities.
b. The representatives for CJSA will serve as the official record keepers.
c. Show season will take place from April – August (up to CO State Fair).
d. Points will be totaled from all of the sanctioned shows.
e. Any grievances must be presented to a CJSA Personal Relations Officer within 24 hours of the incident in writing and must be
accompanied by a $100 non-refundable fee.
2. Membership Eligibility
a. Membership is open to all Colorado swine exhibitors ages 3-19 as of January 1st of the current year. 19 year olds must be eligible for
Colorado State Fair or National Western Stock Show.
b. A $35 membership fee will be assessed to become a member of the CJSA.
i. Membership benefits
1. Eligibility for point’s awards.
2. Leadership opportunity.
3. CJSA T-shirt.
c. Members must be signed up and paid before the beginning of the show.
i. Points will not be accumulated until membership dues are paid.
d. The CJSA is not responsible for accidents.
3. CJSA Board
a. Shall consist of 9 at-large representatives. Past president will be ex officio.
i. President shall:
* Make 50% of shows.
* Breaks tie breakers in voting.
* Call meetings, set agenda.
* Create any letters that need to go out as a result of a complaint or grievance.
ii. Vice President shall:
* Make 60% of shows.
* Schedules CJSA representatives and volunteers for each show throughout the summer.
iii. Secretary shall:
* Collect and calculate points. Send points to webmaster by the first of the week preceding the show.
* Maintain minutes of every meeting.
iv. Treasurer shall:
* Manage finances throughout the year.
* Provide a financial report at every meeting.
* Write checks with board approval.
v. Public Relations shall:
* Receive all complaints and grievances filed.
* Report to the board the complaints and grievances.
vi. Sponsorship Coordinator shall:
* Collect sponsorship funds from various businesses and individuals.
* Request the help of other board members and CJSA members to collect sponsorships as needed.
* Provide a report to the board on the level of sponsorships at each meeting.
4. Sanctioned Shows
a. Shows must follow all rules set forth by the CJSA for record keeping.
b. A standardized entry form and placing document will be furnished by the CJSA for all sanctioned shows.
i. $200 fee will be required to become a CJSA sanctioned show. If the show would like CJSA Representatives to help with scales,
computer work, and clean-up then the fee will be an additional $100 which will go to benefit CJSA exhibitors for prizes. Additional help
must be made known 3 weeks prior to show to the Vice President
c. A mailing list must be turned into the CJSA from each sanctioned show to be used for advertising and future recruitment (list
will be shared with each show).
d. All sanctioned shows shall submit a finalized list of class placings and champions within 24 hours of the conclusion of
the show via e-mail them to the secretary.
e. Pigs may be only entered in one class per show.
f. Sanctioned Shows must approve their judge selection before hiring or advertising that specific judge.
g. All CJSA sanctioned shows are required to have three aspects to their show:
i. Classes for purebred and crossbred market hogs.
ii. Swine showmanship (as of Jan. 1 or eligible for Colorado State Fair or National Western Stock Show.)
1. Novice: 3-8
2. Junior: 9-11
3. Intermediate: 12-15
4. Senior: 16-19
iii. Select the top five hogs overall at the show.
h. Pigs must be entered in the name of the CJSA member that wishes to accumulate points from exhibiting of that animal.
*** THAT ANIMAL ONCE EXHIBITED BY A CJSA EXHIBITOR WILL NOT CHANGE HANDS TO EARN POINTS FOR ANOTHER CJSA EXHIBITOR.
i. All hogs being used to earn points at CJSA sanctioned shows must be owned by THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY (BROTHER, SISTER, STEP-BROTHER
OR STEP-SISTER) ONCE THAT SIBLING STARTS SHOWING THAT PIG AS A CJSA HOG IT WILL NOT CHANGE TO ANOTHER SIBLING AT A CJSA
SANCTIONED SHOW OR NON-FAMILY EXHIBITOR. THESE ANIMALS MUST BE IN possession of the exhibitor no later THAN JUNE 1ST of the
current show season.
j. CJSA members are expected to exhibit their own animals. If the CJSA member is unable to exhibit their own animal, only
CJSA members may be used as a substitute. Substitute showman must first seek approval from CJSA officials prior to the
show.
k. A CJSA member may only use a substitute showman at a maximum of two shows during the CJSA show season.
i. This does don’t include situations of a member having more than one entry in a class or if the member has pigs in 2
different classes being shown simultaneously.
l. Showmanship classes
i. Exhibitor may only exhibit their own hogs
m. CJSA will not be responsible for the formation of the enforcement of the individual show rules.
i. These are the sole responsibility of the show management.
n. The CJSA reserves the right to have space for an official CJSA booth at each show.
o.CJSA WILL HAVE EXHIBITORS HOLD TO 4-H OR FFA CODE OF CONDUCT AT SANCTIONED SHOWS
p. IF A CJSA EXHIBITOR BREAKS ANY RULES OR BY-LAWS HE OR SHE COULD LOOSE ALL POINTS TO BE DETERMINED BY THE CJSA BOARD.
5. Points
a. Points will be gained for members in the following breeds, for market swine, for the CJSA show season: Hampshire, Yorkshire,
Duroc, OPB (Darks and Whites will show together), and Crossbred.
b. Only the points from the top two pigs that an individual exhibits at each show will count toward an individual’s total points.
i. Only one pig per breed can accumulate points for the member.
1. Cannot receive points for two Yorkshire barrows. To receive points for two pigs, the member must exhibit two separate
breeds. If showing two pigs of the same breed, only the higher placing of the two will accumulate points.
c. No limit to the number of breeds that a member can enter at each show, but can only earn points for two breeds at each show.
i. It is possible to use points earned from more than two breeds to achieve a members overall points total
1. The exhibitor may use points for Duroc and Hampshire pigs at one show and points for Crossbred and Yorkshire pigs at
another show to achieve an overall point’s total.
d. Points will be awarded as follows:
i. Top 5 placing in each class:
1st – 50 points
2nd – 40 points
3rd - 30 points
4th - 20 points
5th - 10 points
6th and lower - 5 pts
ii. Breed Winners:
1. Champions – 10 points
2. Reserves – 5 points
iii. Overall Winners:
1. Grand – 40 points
2. Res. Grand – 25 points
3. Third – 15 points
4. Fourth – 10 points
5. Fifth – 5 points
iv. Showmanship:
1. 1st – 20 points
2. 2nd – 19 points
3. 3rd – 18 points
4. 4th – 17 points
5. 5th – 16 points
6. 6th – 15 points
7. 7th – 14 points
8. 8th – 13 points
9. 9th – 12 points
10. 10th – 11 points
11. 11th and lower – 5 points
f. Only hogs that are within the CJSA weight limit at a given show will accumulate points for a member. However, a member
may show heavier hogs at that show, but will not earn points with that hog in class, breed division, or showmanship. A
member’s showmanship hog must be within the weight limit.
g. Any hog that is re-classified during the show season will retain points earned before re-classification, but from that point
further, only gain points in its new classification.
6. Awards
a. Dependant solely on funding.
b. Prizes will be awarded for top finishers in each of the following categories:
i. Showmanship (in each age division)
1. Awards will go to top 5 finishers in each age division.
2. Tie-breaks will be decided by number of showmanship 1st, and then the number of 2nd and so on until the tie is broken.
ii. Breed Divisions
1. Awards will go to top 5 finishers in each breed.
2. Awards will go to the top 10 finishers in the crossbred division.
a. Showmanship and educational points will be used to determine tie-breaks.
iii. Overall Exhibitor
1. Awards will be given to the top 10 exhibitors Overall.
a. Showmanship and educational points will be used to determine tie-breaks
c. Market hogs and showmanship are separate categories and points for each will not be combined at any time. Except for
Overall points.
d. To be eligible for top awards in breeds or overall, the CJSA member must participate in that category at least 40% of the time
during the CJSA show season.
i. Example 1: To be eligible for top awards in Hampshire, the exhibitor must have shown a Hampshire at 4 or more CJSA
sanctioned shows, assuming there are 10 sanctioned shows.
ii. Example 2: If an exhibitor shows at 8 CJSA shows but only shows a Duroc at 3 shows, he/she will not be eligible for top
Duroc awards. However, those Duroc points may still count towards an exhibitor’s total points.
e. A member's year-end totals in the Overall, Breeds, and Showmanship divisions will be comprised of points from the 8 shows in
which they accumulate the most points. (i.e. A member will not need to attend all sanctioned shows to remain competitive. This
provision will allow members "free" weekends for other obligations.)
